Perimenopause & Menopause Therapy in Denver

Perimenopause can hijack mental health years before anyone names it.

We help women in perimenopause and menopause

Anxiety that arrives in your forties out of nowhere, rage with a hair trigger, brain fog that threatens your competence, sleep in ruins, and a mood that no longer answers to effort.

My Denver Therapy treats the psychological side of perimenopause and menopause — therapy plus psychiatric medication support in one practice — at four metro offices and online across Colorado.

The ambush nobody briefed you for

You’ve handled stress your whole life, and suddenly the old tools don’t work. You cry in the car over nothing, snap at people you love, lose the word mid-sentence in a meeting you’re running. Your doctor runs labs and says you’re fine.

A decade of this can get mislabeled as depression, burnout, or “just aging” — while the actual driver, a nervous system riding years of hormonal turbulence, goes unaddressed. Half the women we see in midlife were ambushed exactly this way.

What perimenopause does to mental health

Estrogen and progesterone interact directly with the brain systems that regulate mood, anxiety, sleep, and memory. As they fluctuate — sharply and unpredictably, for years — many women experience new or intensified anxiety, depressive episodes, irritability that feels foreign, panic, and cognitive fog.

Women with a history of postpartum depression or PMDD are notably more vulnerable. This is physiology, not character, and it is treatable from both directions.

It's also never just hormones

Perimenopause tends to arrive stacked on everything else midlife is serving: teenagers leaving or not leaving, empty nest, aging parents, a career at maximum demand, a marriage at twenty years, and a culture that quietly deletes women it no longer considers young.

The hormones amplify the load; the load feeds the symptoms. Treating one while ignoring the other is why so many women have already tried something that half-worked. Our midlife therapy work and this page are the same conversation.

Therapy and medication, coordinated

Therapy carries real evidence here: CBT approaches improve mood, sleep, and even the distress of hot flashes; depth work addresses the grief and identity reckoning midlife genuinely raises; somatic approaches help a body whose alarm system has gone jumpy.

On the medication side, our psychiatric nurse practitioner manages the psychiatric piece — antidepressants, anxiety, sleep — in coordination with your therapist, and we’ll gladly coordinate with your OB-GYN or menopause specialist on the hormone-therapy question, which remains theirs. No therapy-only practice in Denver can offer that combination under one roof.

Frequently asked questions

Is it perimenopause or depression?

Sometimes both, often entangled. Clues toward perimenopause: symptoms that fluctuate with your cycle, new-onset anxiety or rage in your 40s, and cognitive fog alongside sleep disruption. A therapist who knows the difference — working with your medical provider — beats guessing.

Should I do therapy or hormone therapy?

They’re different lanes, not rivals. HRT is a medical decision with your physician; therapy treats the psychological load, the identity work, and the symptoms evidence says it reaches. Many women do both, coordinated.

Is the rage normal?

Common, physiological, and still worth treating — especially when it’s aimed at people you love. You’re not becoming someone else; your thresholds moved, and they can be worked with.

My partner doesn’t understand what’s happening. Can that be part of this?

Yes. A few joint sessions often convert a bewildered partner into an ally, which changes the daily experience of the whole transition.

White close quotation mark

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
