in Denver, Colorado

Start living the way you want to live, every day.

We help you overcome social anxiety

Social anxiety is something that can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates that about 7% of American adults (about 15 million people) experience social anxiety. If you’re experiencing social anxiety in any form, you’re not alone!

Similar to how we can treat anxiety with therapy, social anxiety is something that we can help you overcome through therapy. Our trained Denver social anxiety therapists in Cherry Creek, Lone Tree, and Greenwood Village can provide you with tangible skills and tools that can help you feel confident, let go of your anxiety, and start living and interacting with people and going places the way you want to live.

How we treat social anxiety

Every person is unique, and we’re here to listen to your individual experience with social anxiety to help you overcome it. We help you identify the situations that cause you anxiety and use proven therapy methods to help you become the person you want to be, in the situations that matter most to you.

Treating social anxiety is different for each person, but here are some techniques that we use with our clients:

Mindfulness
Providing skills and reminders of how to stay present and aware of what’s happening in that moment.

Prioritizing relationships
Understanding the people you want in your life and identifying why those relationships are important to you.

Management skills
Some level of nervousness or anxiety is part of all of our lives. We help you manage your anxiety so that you can work through it in productive ways.

Help you communicate
Teaching you different skills to start and maintain conversations, meet new people, and build upon the relationships you have.

Opportunities to practice
Especially when you’ve had social anxiety for a long time, it might take some practice to rediscover how you interact with people. We’ll help you identify situations where you can take steps forward in the real world.

Symptoms of social anxiety disorder

While social anxiety can take shape in many forms, here are some common reasons why people seek therapy to treat it.

Social anxiety disorder can cause physical symptoms like fast heart rates, blushing, sweating, trembling, upset stomach, light-headedness, tense muscles, and an inability to think clearly. These types of symptoms can make you avoid social situations, make it difficult to start conversations, and effect your relationships in many different ways.

If left untreated, social anxiety can change over time and become very disruptive to many settings in your everyday life. By working with a therapist, we can help you reduce your anxiety, set priorities, and take steps to treat your social anxiety before it gets worse.

Is therapy worth it for social anxiety?

Social anxiety can be overwhelming, but therapy and treatments for social anxiety can help. According to a study, anxiety disorders cost $42.3 billion dollars annually in the US. If you’re looking for social anxiety therapy in Denver, there are many qualified professionals who can help you manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Our therapists at My Denver Therapy have helped thousands of people in Denver who have anxiety, social anxiety, and need help with stress management.

What causes social anxiety?

A number of factors can cause social anxiety, but the good news is that it can be treated. If you’ve been experiencing social anxiety for a long period of time, it may take more time and work to treat, but we can start by identifying the causes of your anxiety to create a plan.

Some common factors that cause social anxiety include:

Genetics: Anxiety disorders often run in families, so if your parents or siblings have anxiety, you’re more likely to develop it as well.

Your brain: People who have overactive parts of their brain may experience increased stress and anxiety in social situations.

Environments and experiences: Some kinds of social anxiety can be learned from negative experiences, like bullying, a humiliating memory, or overprotective parents. Conflict and trauma can often play a role in why people experience social anxiety.

Lifestyle or professional changes: If you’re doing something for the first time or being asked to do something you haven’t done much of before at work or home, this can trigger feelings of nervousness and fear because of how unfamiliar they are.

We can provide psychiatric medication management

At My Denver Therapy, our in-house psychiatric nurse practitioner Shannon Keane (PMHNP-BC) can provide medication management and prescriptions to help treat behavior, mood, and mental health issues. As a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, Shannon is dual certified in family medicine and psychiatry, and she strives to provide patients with comprehensive strategies to improve and maintain their mental health.

By combining therapy with medication management within one therapy private practice, we’re able to provide a deeper level of support and an integrated approach to mental health for clients who have depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, or are looking into Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Instead of searching for a therapist and a psychiatrist in Denver separately, we can save you time and create an integrated plan for your mental wellness by offering both in our Denver area offices.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.

Meet our Denver therapists

My Denver Therapy is one of the largest woman-owned therapy private practices in Colorado with many of the best, most requested therapists in Denver.

As a therapist-owned practice with decades of combined experience, we care about seeing our clients heal, grow, and thrive. We’re one of the only therapy practices in Colorado with licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners who actively see new clients. Whether you’re an adult, teen, young adult, couple, or family, our inclusive therapist team is built to specialize in you.

Our practice started with one therapist in a shared office suite, but we’ve grown to help thousands of people in Colorado by providing in-person therapy at our conveniently located Denver Metro area counseling offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree, plus online therapy for clients throughout Colorado. Because of the way our team works, our therapists provide consultation for other therapists and private practices in the Denver Metro area.

Our inclusive therapists provide some of the most innovative, effective, and in-demand forms of therapy available today, including EMDR, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, CBT, and IFS. We also have more therapists trained in Ketamine-assisted therapy and more teen therapists and young adult counselors than nearly every other private practice in Denver.

We know that clients want to find the best therapists in Denver, so our team includes therapists with different backgrounds, specialities, and experiences to help you find the right fit. We’ll match you with one of our therapists who is the best for your goals, location, budget, and schedule to help you get started quickly.

We’re out of network for insurance, Tricare, and are unable to take Medicaid, but most of our therapists’ rates are lower than the local and national averages for therapy.

All of our therapists take a client-focused approach to counseling and approach each session with  a commitment to your progress and growth.
