Child therapy
in Denver

We create a safe, trusting environment for your child.

We help your child understand and share their feelings

Life changes, family issues, problems at school or with friends, and more can create challenges for your child as they grow up and are beginning to establish their identity. By creating a trusted relationship with your child, we can help them and your family resolve issues, change behaviors for the better, and help nurture positive relationships with your child by helping them learn how to better express, understand, and communicate their feelings.

At My Denver Therapy, we provide therapy for children who are 10 and older, adolescents, and teens. Depending on the situation, we often see children individually in addition to family therapy group sessions. Family therapy can help you and your family identify patterns to help you communicate more effectively and support each other’s needs.

While some children are ready to come in and just share what’s going on in their lives, others might need some more time and activities to help them feel comfortable with sharing what they’re going through. Some children also have ADHD and have symptoms that can be challenging to manage as parents. Our Denver therapists for children in Cherry Creek, Lone Tree, and Greenwood Village are here to help you and your child feel comfortable, supported, and understood through therapy.

Through different forms of therapy, including play therapy and traditional “talk therapy,” we help your child express what they’re experiencing and feeling. Our Denver-based child therapists create a safe environment where children feel comfortable and in control of what they’re doing, which often helps them communicate their challenges more openly and honestly.

Reasons why parents seek therapy for children

When children are able to feel comfortable with sharing their feelings and experiences out loud, it often helps them find their voice. By making it comfortable for your children to share how they see the world, we’re able to uncover their genuine feelings and help them practice new ways of coping with whatever they’re going through.

While every situation is unique in its own way due to family dynamics and other factors, here are some of the most common reasons for seeking therapy for children:

  • Academic stress
  • Behavior issues at school or home
  • Grief or loss
  • Anger management or help managing frustration
  • Bullying (in either direction)
  • Anxiety or fear of places, events, or social situations
  • Trauma due to abuse or neglect
  • Low self-esteem
  • Managing relationships with family members
  • Identity issues
  • Changes at home, like divorce, blended families, or parents returning to work
  • Skills to cope with emotions
  • Survivors of physical or sexual abuse
  • Exposure to violence at home, verbal or physical
  • Witnessing a traumatic event, like a crime or car accident

Benefits of therapy for children

  • Develop a positive self-image. Child therapy can help with to developing a positive self-image and feel good about themselves. This can be especially helpful for children who are struggling with low self-esteem or body image issues.

  • Resolve trauma. Therapy for kids can help them to resolve trauma that they have experienced. This can include things like abuse, neglect, or witnessing violence.
  • Improve academic performance. Therapy can also help children to improve their academic performance in school. This can be especially helpful for children who are struggling with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities.

Sandplay therapy specialists

With some of our clients, especially younger clients, we can use Sandplay therapy, a hands-on therapy that facilitates the mind’s natural ability and capacity to heal. It’s a combination of play therapy and art therapy that’s used to assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of mental health issues.

With Sandplay therapy, clients create a physical manifestation of their imaginations using sand, water, and other small objects. Research has shown that sandplay can help improve emotional expression and reduce the distress that comes with sharing traumatic events or experiences.

By providing and creating a safe space to express themselves, clients can use a sand tray to create and visualize solutions to the problems that they’re experiencing.

We can provide psychiatric medication management

At My Denver Therapy, our in-house psychiatric nurse practitioner Shannon Keane (PMHNP-BC) can provide medication management and prescriptions to help treat behavior, mood, and mental health issues. As a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, Shannon is dual certified in family medicine and psychiatry, and she strives to provide patients with comprehensive strategies to improve and maintain their mental health.

By combining therapy with medication management within one therapy private practice, we’re able to provide a deeper level of support and an integrated approach to mental health for clients who have depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, or are looking into Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Instead of searching for a therapist and a psychiatrist in Denver separately, we can save you time and create an integrated plan for your mental wellness by offering both in our Denver area offices.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.

Meet our Denver therapists

My Denver Therapy is one of the largest woman-owned therapy private practices in Colorado with many of the best, most requested therapists in Denver.

As a therapist-owned practice with decades of combined experience, we care about seeing our clients heal, grow, and thrive. We’re one of the only therapy practices in Colorado with licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners who actively see new clients. Whether you’re an adult, teen, young adult, couple, or family, our inclusive therapist team is built to specialize in you.

Our practice started with one therapist in a shared office suite, but we’ve grown to help thousands of people in Colorado by providing in-person therapy at our conveniently located Denver Metro area counseling offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree, plus online therapy for clients throughout Colorado. Because of the way our team works, our therapists provide consultation for other therapists and private practices in the Denver Metro area.

Our inclusive therapists provide some of the most innovative, effective, and in-demand forms of therapy available today, including EMDR, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, CBT, and IFS. We also have more therapists trained in Ketamine-assisted therapy and more teen therapists and young adult counselors than nearly every other private practice in Denver.

We know that clients want to find the best therapists in Denver, so our team includes therapists with different backgrounds, specialities, and experiences to help you find the right fit. We’ll match you with one of our therapists who is the best for your goals, location, budget, and schedule to help you get started quickly.

We’re out of network for insurance, Tricare, and are unable to take Medicaid, but most of our therapists’ rates are lower than the local and national averages for therapy.

All of our therapists take a client-focused approach to counseling and approach each session with  a commitment to your progress and growth.
