Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(CBT) in Denver

Manage and reduce symptoms with one of the most proven types of therapy.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, often known as CBT, is recognized as one of the most effective ways to treat anxiety, trauma and PTSD, depression, eating disorders, and more. Because of how effective it is, this type of focused therapy, where a therapist and client work towards specific goals, has become one of the most popular and requested forms of therapy.

While CBT was originally designed to help people with depression, multiple studies have proven that CBT is one of, if not the most effective form of therapy for many types of mental health conditions. In fact, CBT treatments have the lowest relapse rates of any type of therapy treatment. Most research studies agree that CBT also leads to greater results over a shorter period of time as well, especially when compared to other types of talk therapy.

Part of what makes CBT so different is that it’s focused on the present. If you don’t want to focus on past trauma or your childhood, CBT is more focused on skills, solving current problems, and setting goals. Using CBT, a therapist aims to help you solve problems that are current and relevant in your life. That can be refreshing for many people who don’t want to get into their past.

Even when people have experience with therapy, one part of CBT that separates it from other types of therapy are the “assignments” that invite you to be a more active participants in your mental health. By taking what you’re working on in CBT treatment with a Denver therapist to the outside world, you can better change your thoughts, behaviors, and your emotions.

How CBT works

Identify relationships between thoughts and behaviors

When you understand the way your thoughts influence your behaviors, and how those behaviors change what you believe, it helps you understand how changing these thoughts or behaviors can create change.

Challenge unhelpful thoughts

People’s brains take mental shortcuts to help us navigate the world, but these can often be too broad or even inaccurate. Using CBT, you can discover which of these thoughts might be harming instead of helping you. When you challenge these thoughts by looking closely at what’s real, you can transform the way you respond.

Experiment with behaviors

When working with a CBT therapist, you might “design” a few experiments, where you try a healthier type of behavior and examine the results. When you experiment with your behavior, you can break patterns, learn new things, and gain new understanding about what’s real in ways that help you live a happier life.

Complete homework

In general, CBT goes outside of the session and into the real world. It’s very common to be assigned “homework” to complete between sessions so that you can put your work into action in the real world.

What is CBT therapy like?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is typically focused and structured over a shorter period of time.

Typically, treatment lasts around 15-20 sessions, but it can be longer or shorter depending on the types and number of issues someone wants to work on in therapy.

In your sessions with your Denver CBT therapist, you’ll identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts that are getting in the way of you living a life that feels fulfilling. You’ll identify ways to decrease destructive, unhelpful behaviors, and develop healthy behaviors instead.

While your CBT sessions can vary depending on what you’re treating, these are the goals that guide your sessions with a Denver CBT therapist.

What makes CBT different

As an evidence-based type of therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is not based on what might hypothetically work; it’s based on what research has proven actually works.

CBT has been proven to effectively treat anxiety and depression—it’s even as effective as medication alone, if not more effective.

Also, with the low percentage of relapse, CBT treatments are highly effective for long-term mental health issues.

Meet our Denver therapists

My Denver Therapy is one of the largest woman-owned therapy private practices in Colorado with many of the best, most requested therapists in Denver.

As a therapist-owned practice with decades of combined experience, we care about seeing our clients heal, grow, and thrive. We’re one of the only therapy practices in Colorado with licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners who actively see new clients. Whether you’re an adult, teen, young adult, couple, or family, our inclusive therapist team is built to specialize in you.

Our practice started with one therapist in a shared office suite, but we’ve grown to help thousands of people in Colorado by providing in-person therapy at our conveniently located Denver Metro area counseling offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree, plus online therapy for clients throughout Colorado. Because of the way our team works, our therapists provide consultation for other therapists and private practices in the Denver Metro area.

Our inclusive therapists provide some of the most innovative, effective, and in-demand forms of therapy available today, including EMDR, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, CBT, and IFS. We also have more therapists trained in Ketamine-assisted therapy and more teen therapists and young adult counselors than nearly every other private practice in Denver.

We know that clients want to find the best therapists in Denver, so our team includes therapists with different backgrounds, specialities, and experiences to help you find the right fit. We’ll match you with one of our therapists who is the best for your goals, location, budget, and schedule to help you get started quickly.

We’re out of network for insurance, Tricare, and are unable to take Medicaid, but most of our therapists’ rates are lower than the local and national averages for therapy.

All of our therapists take a client-focused approach to counseling and approach each session with  a commitment to your progress and growth.
