Mom Rage Therapy in Denver
Mom rage is sudden, intense anger that feels far bigger than whatever triggered it, usually followed by a wave of guilt. It is a stress response, and it is treatable.
What is mom rage?
Mom rage is the fight response of an overloaded nervous system. Sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, constant noise and touch, and months of unexpressed resentment accumulate until a spilled cup or a whined request detonates the whole store at once. The explosion feels involuntary because, physiologically, much of it is.
The guilt that follows convinces many mothers they have an anger problem. Far more often, they have a depletion problem wearing anger’s clothes.
My Denver Therapy provides therapy for moms experiencing mom rage and postpartum rage at four Denver metro offices and online throughout Colorado. Our woman-owned team includes perinatal-trained therapists who treat the causes underneath the anger, with appointments typically available within a week.
Why you're this angry
Anger is the body’s signal that a boundary has been crossed or a need has gone unmet too long. Motherhood, as most women live it, crosses boundaries and defers needs all day. The load is invisible, the touch is constant, the sleep is broken, and the resentment has nowhere sanctioned to go. Rage becomes the exit.
Your own history matters too. Mothers who grew up around yelling, chaos, or emotional neglect often find those wounds reopening the moment their child hits the same age they were. When your reaction to a tantrum feels ancient, it usually is.
Postpartum rage is different
In the first year or two after birth, rage deserves its own name. Postpartum rage is a recognized symptom of postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, driven by steep hormonal change on top of extreme sleep loss. Many mothers who would never call themselves depressed show up furious instead. If your anger arrived with your baby, start with our postpartum therapy team.
When it's time for support
- Your own reactions scare you, or you dread your next blowup.
- You apologize to your kids at bedtime more nights than not.
- Your family has started managing your moods, or your partner has commented on the yelling.
- The rage is followed by shame spirals that eat the rest of your day.
If you ever fear you might hurt yourself or your children, call or text 988, or call Colorado Crisis Services at 1-844-493-8255 right away. That fear is a symptom asking for immediate care, and acting on it early protects everyone, including you.
How mom rage therapy works
Your therapist starts by mapping what actually feeds your rage: the sleep debt, the invisible load, the hormonal picture, the history underneath. Anger that traces to your own childhood responds well to EMDR, where our team holds deep expertise. Somatic therapy widens your window of tolerance so the fuse lengthens in real time. IFS gives the furious part of you a hearing instead of a muzzle, which is usually when it quiets.
When rage rides on postpartum depression or anxiety, we treat that condition directly, and our psychiatric nurse practitioner can fold medication into the plan if you want it. When the load imbalance in your marriage keeps refilling the resentment, our couples therapists get both partners in the room.
Classroom-style anger management assumes a discipline problem. We treat the cause instead.

Frequently asked questions
Is mom rage normal?
Rage is one of the most commonly reported and least discussed experiences of motherhood, so you are in large company. Frequent, intense rage is still a signal worth taking seriously, because it usually points to depletion, anxiety, or old wounds that respond well to treatment.
Is mom rage a symptom of postpartum depression?
It can be. Postpartum rage is a recognized symptom of both postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, and for many mothers irritability shows up before sadness does. A screening with a perinatal-trained therapist can sort out what is driving it.
Does mom rage mean I’m a bad mother?
No. Rage is a nervous system pushed past capacity, and it says nothing about your love for your children. The guilt you feel afterward is evidence of how much you care. Repair with your kids, and support for you, are both very learnable.
Do I need anger management?
Usually not. Anger management targets behavior. Mom rage almost always has upstream causes: sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, unshared mental load, or trauma. Treating those causes is what makes the anger recede.
Can medication help with mom rage?
When rage stems from postpartum depression or anxiety, medication can be an effective part of treatment. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner provides medication management alongside therapy, so the decision gets made carefully and inside one team.
