Postpartum therapy in Highlands Ranch, CO
My Denver Therapy provides postpartum and perinatal therapy for Highlands Ranch parents at our Lone Tree office, minutes from Sky Ridge Medical Center and UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, and at our Greenwood Village office on Arapahoe Road
We help postpartum women in Highlands Ranch
We treat postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, birth trauma, and the harder-to-name experience of not feeling like yourself after a baby. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner provides medication management when it is needed, and online sessions are available across Colorado for parents who cannot leave the house.
You did everything right. The nursery in the new build off Wildcat Reserve is finished. Your mom came for two weeks. And still, you are crying in the car in the Target parking lot on Lucent, lying awake checking the monitor when the baby is finally asleep, or feeling a flatness you cannot explain to your partner. The Highlands Ranch mom group on Facebook makes it look like everyone else is fine. They are not. About one in seven mothers experiences a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, and it is among the most treatable conditions we see.
What we treat
Postpartum depression. Persistent sadness, numbness, hopelessness, or inability to feel connected to your baby, lasting beyond the first two weeks.
Postpartum anxiety and OCD. Racing thoughts, constant checking, intrusive images of harm coming to the baby, panic. Intrusive thoughts are common and do not mean you will act on them. We treat them with evidence-based approaches, including exposure and response prevention where appropriate.
Birth trauma. A delivery that was frightening, out of control, or medically complicated, whether at Sky Ridge, UCHealth Highlands Ranch, or elsewhere. EMDR and Brainspotting resolve birth trauma effectively, often in a short course of treatment.
Pregnancy and perinatal anxiety. Anxiety during pregnancy, after loss, or after a difficult previous birth. We also provide infertility counseling for parents whose path to this baby was long.
Identity, relationship, and rage. The loss of your former self, resentment toward a partner, anger that frightens you. These are part of the postpartum picture and belong in therapy.
Partners and non-birthing parents. Fathers and partners experience postpartum depression and anxiety too, and we see them individually and in couples counseling.
How we treat postpartum conditions
Our perinatal therapists use CBT and ACT for anxiety and depression, EMDR and Brainspotting for birth trauma, attachment-focused work for bonding, and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples whose relationship has been strained by a new baby.
When symptoms are severe or not improving with therapy alone, Shannon Keane, MSN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, our psychiatric nurse practitioner, provides evaluation and medication management, including options compatible with breastfeeding, coordinated with your therapist so you are not managing two providers who never talk.
Babies are welcome in session. Telehealth is available for the weeks when getting out the door is too much.
Two offices on your route
Lone Tree: 9233 Park Meadows Dr, Suite 200, a few minutes from Sky Ridge Medical Center and roughly ten minutes from UCHealth Highlands Ranch. For parents already making pediatrician and postpartum follow-up trips in this corridor, the office is on the way.
Greenwood Village: 9600 E Arapahoe Rd, Suite 220, at Arapahoe and I-25. Convenient for a parent returning to work in the Tech Center who wants a session near the office, or for a partner who commutes north.
Both have free parking and elevator access.
Why Highlands Ranch parents choose My Denver Therapy
We are a therapist-owned practice of 20+ licensed clinicians, which means a postpartum client, her partner, and their relationship can all be supported within one practice, with a psychiatric nurse practitioner on staff. Few therapy practices in the south metro offer therapy and medication management together.
We are out-of-network and provide superbills, with sliding-scale rates for clients who qualify. There are no intake or administrative fees. New clients are typically seen within a week, and we prioritize postpartum clients for the soonest available appointment.
Our Highlands Ranch clients also use the same two offices for family therapy as children grow and for trauma therapy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have postpartum depression or just the baby blues?
Baby blues involve mood swings and tearfulness in the first two weeks after birth and resolve on their own. Symptoms that last longer than two weeks, worsen, or include hopelessness, inability to bond, or thoughts of harm are signs of a perinatal mood disorder and warrant treatment.
Are intrusive thoughts about my baby normal?
Intrusive thoughts about harm coming to the baby are extremely common in new parents and are a feature of postpartum anxiety and OCD, not a sign of danger. They respond well to treatment. Tell your therapist about them.
Can I take medication while breastfeeding?
Several antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are considered compatible with breastfeeding. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner will review options with you and coordinate with your OB or pediatrician as needed.
Do you treat dads and partners?
Yes. Partners experience postpartum depression and anxiety, and we see them individually and in couples therapy.
Can I bring my baby to sessions?
Yes. Babies are welcome at both offices and online.
How quickly can I be seen?
Usually within a week. Tell us you are postpartum when you call and we will find the earliest opening.
If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call or text 988, or call the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262, available 24/7.
Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
