Childhood Emotional Neglect Therapy in Denver

This work addresses what should have happened and didn’t.

What is childhood emotional neglect?

Childhood emotional neglect is the wound of what didn’t happen: the feelings nobody asked about, the comfort that never came, the childhood that looked fine in photographs. My Denver Therapy treats CEN in adults at our Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree offices and online across Colorado, using EMDR and Internal Family Systems to reach patterns that formed before you had words for them.

CEN is the absence of emotional attunement in childhood. Nothing dramatic occurred, so nothing was ever named. Your needs weren’t attacked; they were unnoticed. Because there’s no event to point to, most people who grew up this way conclude the problem is them.

Therapists sometimes call it the trauma of omission. Our childhood trauma work addresses what happened to you. This work addresses what should have happened and didn’t.

How it shows up in adults

  • A persistent sense of emptiness you can’t justify, given a “good childhood.”
  • Difficulty knowing what you feel, or believing your feelings warrant attention.
  • Fierce self-reliance: asking for help feels physically wrong.
  • Harsh inner criticism alongside outward competence.
  • Relationships that stay pleasant and shallow because depth feels dangerous.
  • Recognizing yourself in books about emotionally immature parents.

Why this responds to depth work, not advice

You already function. The gap sits underneath function, in a nervous system that learned early that feelings go unanswered. Internal Family Systems meets the parts of you that adapted — the achiever, the self-critic, the one who needs nothing — with curiosity instead of override. EMDR reprocesses the formative moments that taught the lesson, even the quiet ones. The outcome clients describe is less like fixing and more like finally being in the room with themselves.

Who you'd work with

This is home territory for one of our therapists like Lance Hill, MA, LPC, an EMDR- and IFS-trained therapist who works best with clients motivated to go deep and trace where patterns began. He practices from our Denver  location, part of a 20-plus clinician team, and he’s the kind of down-to-earth presence that makes depth work feel less clinical and more human.

A free consultation will tell you quickly whether the fit is right, and re-matching within the practice is easy if it isn’t.

Frequently asked questions

Nothing bad happened to me. Do I still count?

Yes. Absence leaves marks the same way events do; they’re just harder to see. Struggling without a story to justify it is the signature of CEN, not evidence against it.

My parents did their best. Can I do this without blaming them?

Yes. This work is about your unmet needs, not a prosecution. Many clients hold real compassion for their parents and still need to grieve what wasn’t there.

How is this different from regular talk therapy?

Insight alone rarely shifts CEN, because the wound predates language. EMDR and IFS work at the level where the pattern lives, which is why we lead with them.

How long does it take?

Depth work isn’t a sprint, but it isn’t open-ended either. You and your therapist will set markers, and most clients notice the self-criticism softening within the first months.

The emptiness has a cause, and the cause has a treatment. Call (720) 504-4329 or request a consultation.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
