Therapy for college students in Denver
My Denver Therapy provides therapy for college and graduate students at DU, CU Denver, MSU Denver, Regis, and — by video — every campus in Colorado.
We specialize in college and graduate students
Campus counseling centers do real good, but run real waitlists with real session caps; we’re the answer to “what happens after session ten,” with appointments that survive a semester schedule and therapists young enough in their careers to remember the assignment and relate to college students.
We provide both short- and long-term, consistent, mental health support for college and graudate students with anxiety, depression, trauma, and more. Our therapists are trained in some of the most proven forms of therapy, including CBT, EMDR, IFS, and more. Just because you or your son or daughter is a young adult, it doesn’t mean they should work with a less qualified therapist or graduate student at a community mental health center. We specialize in working with teens and young adults during one of the most important transition periods of their lives.
College is sold as the best four years
First time away from home with a roommate you didn’t choose. A major picked at seventeen that fits like someone else’s coat. Friend groups that formed in week two and sealed by October.
The first real depression of your life arriving mid-semester with no family around to notice. For students who were stars in high school, add the demotion shock of being ordinary at a selective school — a private crisis almost nobody admits out loud. All of it on a campus where everyone else’s Instagram insists they’re thriving.
What students bring to therapy
- Anxiety that spikes around exams and never fully lands between them.
- A first depressive episode, often unrecognized — just “I can’t make myself go to class.”
- Homesickness that’s really grief, and independence that’s really isolation.
- Drinking or substances drifting from social to structural.
- Imposter feelings at competitive programs — engineering, pre-med, the honors college.
- Roommate, dating, and first-breakup turbulence that capsizes a semester.
Campus counseling and us are not competitors
Use your campus center — it’s included in your fees, it’s good at crisis triage and short-term support, and CU Denver students get ten free sessions a year. The structural catch is the model: short-term, capped, and waitlisted precisely when demand peaks (midterms, finals, March).
Private therapy picks up what that model can’t hold: weekly continuity, depth work with EMDR or IFS when the semester’s crisis has pre-college roots, and a therapist who’s still yours in June. Many of our students use both, on purpose.
Graduate students: your own weather system
Grad school pressure is structurally different: an advisor who holds your future in one inbox, research isolation that makes undergrad look social, funding anxiety, and the particular imposter syndrome of being paid to be an expert while feeling like a fraud. We see PhD candidates, med students, and law students across the Front Range — mostly by video, because we know what your calendar looks like.
For parents reading this
If you’re searching from another state because your student sounded wrong on the phone, you’re probably not imagining it — parents rarely search this term recreationally. You can arrange and pay for therapy for your adult student; what you can’t buy is access to its contents, because confidentiality for 18-and-overs is absolute within safety limits, and it’s exactly why the therapy will work. Most parents find that trade obvious once it’s named.
Sessions built around a student’s schedule
Video sessions between classes from wherever’s private. Evening slots that don’t collide with labs. Offices near campus corridors — our Denver office sits minutes from DU and the CU Denver/MSU downtown campuses. Sliding-scale rates for the student budget, and a young adult team that already speaks the language of this decade’s specific chaos. Therapists like Cindy Gao, LPCC — a Harvard graduate and former Division I athlete — have been inside the pressure cooker recently enough to skip the translation step.
Frequently asked questions
Can my parents pay without seeing what I talk about?
Yes. Payment and privacy are separate: whoever pays, your sessions are confidential within standard safety limits. We handle this arrangement constantly.
What happens over summer break?
If you’re in Colorado, nothing changes — video continues. If you leave the state, licensure rules mean we pause and plan around it, and your therapist will set that up before finals, not after.
Can I keep using my campus counseling center too?
Yes, and often you should — they’re excellent for on-campus crisis access. We coordinate rather than compete.
I can’t afford much. Is this possible?
Sliding-scale options exist, and some parents fund therapy the way they fund textbooks. Ask in the consult — it’s free, which is also a data point about how this works.
Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
