Family-Estrangement Therapy in Denver

My Denver Therapy provides therapy for adults navigating family estrangement — deciding whether to step back from a parent or sibling, living with no-contact, or carrying the grief that follows.

Estrangement is a type of grief nobody plans for

Our team includes many therapists who specialize in family systems and complicated family relationships, with sessions at four Denver metro offices and by video anywhere in Colorado. We have no agenda for reconciliation; the work serves your wellbeing, whichever direction the relationship takes.

Cutting contact with family, or being cut off, is one of the most isolating experiences an adult can carry. The culture around you insists family is everything. The holidays arrive like weather. People who mean well say “but she’s your mother,” and you stop mentioning it at all. Meanwhile the relationship you lost is with someone still alive, which means the grief never fully closes and the phone can still ring.

Where you might be in it

  • Deciding. Contact still exists, and every visit costs you a week of recovery. You need clarity that isn’t driven by the latest incident. If the relationship is strained but ongoing, our toxic parents work may fit better.
  • Freshly no-contact. Relief and guilt arriving in alternating waves, family members recruited as messengers, and the question of what to tell people.
  • Years in. The acute crisis passed, but an ambient grief persists, and certain dates still land like anniversaries.
  • On the receiving end. A sibling or adult child has gone silent, and you’re left with a story that has no ending.

What the work involves

Estrangement decisions made from an activated state tend to get relitigated forever. Therapy builds the regulated ground first, then does the deeper excavation: how the family system shaped you, what loyalty and guilt are enforcing, and what you actually owe and don’t. Where family wounds run underneath, EMDR and parts work reach them.

Where the loss needs mourning, we treat it as the real grief it is — including protocols for handling contact when it comes, decided in advance rather than at the moment a text arrives.

A team built for complicated families

Because estrangement takes many shapes, we match you to the therapist whose strengths fit yours. Lance Hill, MA, LPC, brings EMDR and IFS depth work to complex family relationships. Brian Thomas, MA, LPC, is a Certified Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Technician for estrangement from narcissistic family systems. Others on our 20-plus clinician team specialize in emotional abuse, childhood family wounds, and grief. And when relatives on both sides genuinely want a facilitated conversation, our family therapists can hold that room — on your timeline, never as pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Will you push me to reconcile?

No. Reconciliation, distance, and no-contact are all legitimate outcomes. The goal is a decision you can live inside, made by you at your steadiest.

Is going no-contact wrong?

It’s a boundary, not a betrayal. Most people arrive at it after years of trying everything else, and therapy can hold both the necessity and the sadness of it.

Why do I still grieve someone who hurt me?

Because you’re grieving the parent you needed as much as the one you had. That grief is coherent, and it responds to being treated as grief.

What do I say when people ask about my family?

You’ll build answers sized to the asker — a script for coworkers, another for friends, another for relatives who push. Rehearsed once, they stop costing you.

White close quotation mark

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
