Therapy for Touched Out, Overstimulated Moms in Denver
Feeling touched out is a nervous system response to more sensory input than your body can process. It is real, it is common, and it is treatable.
What does "touched out" mean?
Being touched out means physical contact has started to feel unbearable. A toddler climbing on you, a baby at your breast, a partner’s hand on your shoulder at the end of the day: your skin registers all of it as too much. It is a form of sensory overload, a sign your nervous system has run out of capacity to process input.
It says nothing about how much you love your children or your partner.
My Denver Therapy offers therapy for moms who feel touched out and overstimulated at four Denver metro offices and online across Colorado. Our woman-owned practice includes perinatal-trained therapists and somatic specialists who work with exactly this, and appointments are typically available within a week.
Why moms get overstimulated
Do the sensory math on an ordinary day. You are touched, climbed on, nursed, or carried against for hours. Sound never stops: crying, chatter, cartoons, the dishwasher, a question asked four times. You make hundreds of small decisions while tracking everyone’s needs before your own.
A nervous system can handle enormous stress when it gets recovery time. Motherhood deletes the recovery time. Overstimulation is the accumulating debt, and being touched out is your body’s way of calling it due.
Some moms carry a higher sensory load than others. Mothers with ADHD, autistic moms, and highly sensitive people often hit overload faster and crash harder. Several of our therapists specialize in exactly these profiles.
Signs you're past overstimulated
- You flinch or tense when your partner reaches for you, and intimacy feels like one more demand.
- Bedtime clinginess fills you with dread instead of tenderness.
- You snap over small noises, then feel ashamed at the size of your reaction.
- You fantasize about a hotel room alone, not for luxury, for silence.
- After the kids sleep, you sit in the dark scrolling because even a TV show feels like input.
If several of these describe your week, your nervous system is asking for more than a bubble bath.
How therapy helps when you're touched out
Advice to “take more me-time” fails because it treats a physiological state as a scheduling problem. Our approach works at the level of the nervous system.
Your therapist helps you map your sensory limits and rebuild genuine recovery into your day, in the life you actually have. Somatic therapy teaches your body to discharge stress rather than store it. Where overstimulation feeds on postpartum anxiety or unhealed trauma, we treat the source directly with approaches like EMDR and IFS.
Many touched out moms also carry strain into their marriage, because desire cannot compete with depletion. When that is part of the picture, our Gottman- and EFT-trained couples therapists help partners understand the difference between rejection and overload.
Why My Denver Therapy
We are one of Colorado’s largest woman-owned practices, with more than 20 therapists across Denver, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, and Arvada, plus telehealth statewide. The team includes perinatal-trained clinicians such as Hillary Naef, MA, LPC, and Cleopatra Denali, MA, LPCC, and a team of somatic and trauma specialists.
Appointments are typically available within a week. Consultations are free. And an online session from your car during naptime is a completely legitimate way to do therapy.
Frequently asked questions
Is being touched out normal?
Yes. It is one of the most common experiences mothers describe, especially while nursing, co-sleeping, or parenting young children. Common does not mean you have to white-knuckle through it. When it persists or starts to affect your relationships, therapy helps.
Does being touched out mean something is wrong with my marriage?
No. It is a sensory state, a nervous system at capacity. Left unaddressed it can strain intimacy, because your partner may read overload as rejection. Naming it accurately, sometimes with a couples therapist in the room, tends to relieve pressure on both sides.
Will it go away on its own?
The physical demands ease as children grow. The pattern underneath, running past your limits until your body revolts, usually follows you into the next season. Persistent overstimulation is also a frequent sign of untreated postpartum anxiety or burnout, which deserve care now.
What kind of therapy works for overstimulation?
Somatic and body-based therapies are the most direct fit, because overstimulation lives in the nervous system. Your therapist may add EMDR or IFS when old wounds amplify the overload, or treat co-occurring postpartum anxiety. The plan follows the cause.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
