Back in 2020, like nearly every other industry, therapy experienced a huge shift. Because therapists couldn’t see clients in person, most therapists exclusively did teletherapy or online therapy. Now that it’s 2023, things have changed—drastically.
While many therapists in the always-exception states of New York and California still maintain a high percentage of teletherapy clients, here in Colorado, we’ve seen that the vast majority of clients want to meet with their therapist in real life.
Nearly all clients request in-person therapy
At My Denver Therapy, we have about 20 therapists across 3 offices who see roughly 300 clients every week. We are one of the largest therapy private practices in Colorado, even including ones that accept insurance or Medicaid.
Mostly due to the great work our therapists throughout Denver do, we receive more organic, inbound inquiries than nearly every other private-pay therapy practice anywhere Denver. We don’t do any paid marketing, so our wide range of therapists results in a wide range of clientele that is fairly representative of people in the state who see a therapist.
Back in 2020 and 2021, 100% of our clients were teletherapy or online. Now in 2023, about 97% of our clients request in-person therapy instead of teletherapy.
Our offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree are maxed out with clients every week, and we continue to expand our offices and hire more therapists. One of the biggest reasons why we’re able to do that that because our therapists offer in-person therapy.
The desire for people to meet with a therapist in person is the same for adult therapy and teen therapy, but it’s closer to 100% for couples and families. From what we’ve seen in Colorado, even clients who have had many years of teletherapy are ready meet with their therapists in real life again.
New therapists should offer in-person therapy
Because clients who prefer teletherapy are few and far between, we no longer hire therapists who want an exclusively teletherapy caseload of clients. We know that it’s not what most of our clients request, and we want to make sure that we can effectively fill our therapists’ caseloads quickly.
However, all of our therapists have a small percentage of teletherapy clients. Some are able to arrange their schedules to have a day or half-day of online clients, which creates some flexibility for them, which we welcome and encourage when possible.
When new grads or pre-licensed therapists tell us that they want to work with clients exclusively online, they’re often trying to create a remote-only setup for an in-person industry, especially in Colorado. This desire to work 100% remotely, paired with an often limited amount of training that shrinks the population of clients a new therapist can work with, can be one of the biggest reasons why new therapists “fail” when they could be thriving and growing their own caseloads by offering in-person sessions for their clients.
It’s true that online platforms like Talkspace allow for therapists to work exclusively online, but they limits their earning potential and how they work. If a therapist wants to work at a private practice, not offering in-person sessions will inevitably make it take much longer for them to build a client caseload that allows them to earn a livable wage.
