At My Denver Therapy, we understand that therapy can feel like a significant financial investment. We believe that your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and we want to ensure everyone in our community has access to the support they deserve.
Today, we’ll explore some reasons why therapy can be expensive, and offer resources to help make it more affordable.
The Value of Expertise
Therapy is a specialized service provided by trained professionals. Licensed therapists have invested years in education, often with a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in psychology, social work, or a related field. They undergo rigorous training and supervision to develop the skills and knowledge needed to effectively support clients through complex emotional challenges. Much like you would expect to pay a premium for a doctor with extensive experience, therapist fees reflect the expertise they bring to the table.
The Cost of Running a Practice
Therapists often operate private practices, which means they incur overhead costs like rent, utilities, and professional liability insurance. These expenses factor into the cost of each session.
At My Denver Therapy, we have three therapy offices in the Denver Metro area, but we choose locations where the cost of our offices doesn’t force us to charge exceptionally high rates. Some therapists in the Denver Metro area start at $175 per session, and then they add on confusing “intake fees” because their business costs are too high.
Beyond the Session Fee
While the hourly rate may seem like the only cost, therapists also dedicate time outside of sessions to prepare for meetings, write notes, and stay up-to-date on the latest treatment approaches. This ongoing commitment contributes to the value of therapy.
Making Therapy More Accessible
We believe financial barriers shouldn’t prevent people from getting the help they need. Here at My Denver Therapy, we offer sliding scale sessions, where we work with you to establish a fee that fits your budget. If you have Medicaid or need even lower cost options, we can provide referrals for you.
Exploring Alternatives
Therapy isn’t the only path to mental wellness. Here are some additional resources:
- Support Groups: Connecting with others who share similar struggles can be incredibly empowering. There are free and low-cost support groups available for a variety of mental health concerns.
- Community Mental Health Centers: These centers offer therapy and other mental health services on a sliding scale.
- Online Resources: Several reputable websites offer mental health information, self-help tools, and online communities.
