We support you through one of life's biggest changes
Having a baby drastically changes your life—whether it’s your first, second, or even your fifth (or more!). In fact, as many as 75% of new mothers experience a shift in emotions, often known as the “baby blues” after delivery. More recently, rates of postpartum depression tripled during the pandemic. Reproductive mental wellness and mental health issues can include prenatal or perinatal mood changes and disorders, postpartum OCD, anxiety, infertility, grief, miscarriages, and more.
Many women try to deal with postpartum feelings in isolation or internally, and even ask themselves if something is wrong with them if it doesn’t look or feel like they thought it would. Our culture often overlooks postpartum mental health issues and expects mothers to just get over things with time (saying, “It will get better.”). The reality is that having a baby comes with physical changes, hormones, operating on very little sleep, changes to your schedule, and so much more.
Whether you’re feeling lonely, sad, ashamed, overwhelmed, tired, or just frustrated and need some “you” time, our Denver Metro area postpartum therapists in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree are here to support new mothers (and fathers!) find peace, reassurance, support, and ultimately even rediscover themselves in this season of life.
What is postpartum depression? (PPD)
When you’re a new parent, you likely feel tired and fatigued. In fact, it’s almost a guarantee. You might feel frustrated with your partner or sad about how your schedule has changed. Occasionally, you might feel anxious, isolated, or overwhelmed. One day, you feel great about everything, and then the whole world feels like it’s crumbling down the next.
Because your schedule is so unpredictable, you might have trouble sleeping, eating, and you might worry about the schedule, including sleep schedules, itself. A lot of these things can be experiences and stressors that almost every mom and parent faces, and they’re absolutely things that you might need some level of support for. Even if you’re not necessarily experiencing severe depression, you might still want to talk to someone about what you’re going through, and many people do.
If you’re like most mothers, you’ve probably heard of postpartum depression. It’s important to know that it’s something that can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter if you have a great life, wonderful marriage, enjoyed everything about pregnancy, or everything was the opposite, and you’re just hanging on every day.
Postpartum depression can happen to new moms and moms that have done this before. It doesn’t matter whatever you delivered with a c-section or a “natural” birth. You might be on top of everything, or your whole world might feel like it’s chaos. We’ll help you get through this period so that you can get back to feeling the way that you want to feel.
What is postpartum anxiety?
Mothers can experience postpartum anxiety when they set extremely high expectations of themselves, and then they feel like they’re not meeting those expectations. When this happens, you might experience feelings of panic, which is how your body expresses your anxious thoughts. If you’ve never had panic attacks before, these can be very alarming experiences, especially as a new mom.
Also, you might’ve already had some anxiety before having a baby, especially if you experienced infertility issues. You might’ve learned skills to manage it, or you might not have ever addressed it. Your high expectations of yourself as a mother might come from all kinds of areas—how you were brought up, the way you excel in other parts of your life, and all of the work that you put into it being a mother before you were one.
Whether you’ve had anxiety before, or this is something new, postpartum anxiety can happen to anyone, just like postpartum depression. We can help you work through your anxiety, reset your expectations, and help you find peace through all of the changes that come with motherhood.

Benefits of postpartum therapy
Postpartum therapy can help new mothers in a number of impactful ways. It can provide you with support and understanding, help you to cope with their emotions, and teach you coping mechanisms that you can use when you need them. It can also help you to develop a healthy relationship with your baby and to adjust to your new and important role as a mother.
If you are a new mother who is struggling with postpartum or perinatal mental health issues, here are some of the benefits of postpartum therapy:
- Improved mental health: Postpartum therapy can help you symptoms of postpartum depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.
- Increased coping skills: Postpartum therapy can teach new mothers coping skills that can help with managing stress, anxiety, and other difficult emotions.
- Enhanced relationships: Postpartum therapy can help new mothers to develop stronger relationships with their spouses, other children, and other family members.
- Improved quality of life: Postpartum therapy can help new mothers improve their overall quality of life in a wide variety of ways and settings by reducing stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions.
How becoming a parent can affect you
While people generally talk about all of the good things that babies bring to your life, it’s also important to remember that being a parent presents very real challenges. It’s not as perfect as it always looks on your friend’s Instagram, and every family’s support system is different. Some people might not even have a support system.
You might be struggling with depression, trying to rediscover your own identity, or having trouble adjusting to your role as a parent. You might miss, or even feel like you’re grieving the life you had before you had your baby.
For first-time parents, having a baby is often not what they expected, nor something that goes the way they thought that they had sufficiently prepared for. It’s one of the largest life transitions anyone ever experiences in their lifetime. These are feelings that so many new parents have, and it’s important to talk about them honestly and openly.
When you’re looking for a postpartum therapist in Denver, we give you a non-judgmental, open space to share what you’re feeling with no filters or expectations. In a time where alone time is especially hard to find, we give you time that’s completely dedicated to you and your mental health.
We can provide psychiatric medication management
At My Denver Therapy, our in-house psychiatric nurse practitioner Shannon Keane (PMHNP-BC) can provide medication management and prescriptions to help treat behavior, mood, and mental health issues. As a board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, Shannon is dual certified in family medicine and psychiatry, and she strives to provide patients with comprehensive strategies to improve and maintain their mental health.
By combining therapy with medication management within one therapy private practice, we’re able to provide a deeper level of support and an integrated approach to mental health for clients who have depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, or are looking into Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Instead of searching for a therapist and a psychiatrist in Denver separately, we can save you time and create an integrated plan for your mental wellness by offering both in our Denver area offices.
Other specialities
Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
