Find a Therapist in Denver

Where Most People Start

Thinking of starting therapy in Denver or other parts of Colorado? When you decide that you’re ready to get professional help from a therapist or counselor, it’s often a little daunting and potentially overwhelming to know where to start.

When you start looking, there are online directories of therapists, including Therapy Den and Denver Therapy Match, whoever is running Google Ads that day, recommendations from friends, churches, community organizations, and more. All of these resources can be helpful in some way, but if you’re feeling like it’s a lot, you’re not alone!

Many people, if not most, feel some level of apprehension or anxiety when they share their thoughts and feelings for the first time in a therapy setting. Also, people want to make sure that they find the right therapist in Denver for them, in whatever way feels comfortable to them.

The right fit could be someone older, younger, in a similar life stage or a completely different one. It could be someone who shares your faith or cultural background, or someone who doesn’t because you don’t want that as part of your experience. The good news is that therapists are specially trained to help you get started with therapy, no matter what’s bringing you to seek help.

When you’re trying to find a therapist, it’s important to make sure that you find the right person for you. Even if you have a friend who has been seeing a therapist for years, that person could be great, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be the right fit for you. Some therapists, like ours at My Denver Therapy, are happy to talk with you to help you find the right therapist for you. Also, if one of our therapists isn’t the right fit, we’ll do our best to help you find someone to talk to.

How to choose a therapist in Denver

Before you choose a therapist in Denver, many people find it helpful and comforting to do a little bit of homework and research. Many people find their therapist fairly quickly, but there’s no pressure to go with the first person you happen to contact that day.

While the relationship between a client and therapist is the most important of all, here are some of the basics that people often consider when it comes to therapy:

LOCATION

Is the therapist’s office close your home, office, or kids’ activities? Like many things, a commute of any kind can affect your state of mind and ability to show up for your sessions. If it works better for your life and schedule, does a therapist offer online teletherapy services where you could participate in your session from home? Especially after 2020, many people have found that teletherapy is a much better fit for their lives and schedule.

COST OF THERAPY

The average cost of therapy in Denver in around $150 per hour, which isn’t a small amount and something you might want or need to plan ahead for. The cost of therapy can vary greatly based on a therapist’s location, specialized training, and the length of the sessions. Most of our therapists have rates that are below the local and national averages, and all of them have specialized therapy training to use in your sessions.

SPECIALTIES

Every person is unique, but if you’re like most people, you might be looking for someone who has met with clients who are similar to you or have experienced similar things as you. When you meet with a therapist who specializes in the types of issues you’re experiencing, they often have skills and techniques, including EMDR and IFS, to help you. You want to find a therapist who knows how to treat your problem.

DO YOU LIKE THE PERSON?

If you’re going to be spending dedicated time with a therapist, it’s important for you to feel comfortable speaking with them. Your relationship with your therapist is an important one in your life, and you want to make sure that this is someone that you want to spend your time (and money!) with. Relationships are so important in therapy, and finding the right fit for you is something to pay attention to.

Questions to ask therapists in Denver

When you start contacting therapists, it can help to ask a few questions that help you feel more comfortable before your first session. The first person you contact might be the right fit, but you might be someone who feels more comfortable making a decision after exploring a number of options. Asking questions can be an important part of your process and can be one of the best ways to find a therapist in Denver.

Chances are you’ll share a little about why you’re seeking therapy, and this can help you get a feel for how comfortable you feel with a therapist without even meeting them. Some people want to see someone who has experienced similar things in their lives, but others don’t. For example, some people want to see a Christian therapist in Denver, but faith might not play a large role in what someone else might be coming to therapy for.

If it feels like they could be a good fit, here are some questions that you can ask a therapist to help you get started:

As you’re asking questions and talking with them, you can start to see if you think this is a relationship that’ll work with you and what you’re looking for. One of the most important things in therapy is to find someone you feel comfortable with.

Just like you, every therapist is unique and has different strengths, experiences, and even life stages. Sometimes you’ll want to meet with someone who is in similar life stage as you, but other times you might want a fresh perspective that helps you see things in a different way. These initial emails or conversations can be incredibly helpful when you’re looking to find the right therapist in Denver.

Recommendations for therapists in Denver

Like a lot of things we spend our money and time on, it can help to get a recommendation from friends or someone we trust. While you might not want to create a social media or Nextdoor post letting the world know that you’re seeking therapy, there is a very good chance that someone you know has seen a therapist and has had a positive experience with them.

If your friend is someone you trust and feel comfortable with, they might even share what their sessions were like and why they felt comfortable with their therapist. Many times, this can help put you at ease with the types of things you might be sharing in your sessions and build your confidence that you’re making the right decision seeking therapy.

Many churches and community organizations throughout Denver also have relationships with therapists to support their congregations and communities. From national organizations that specialize in trauma to some of the largest churches in Denver, many of our clients are referred to us because of how we’ve been successful with building relationships with members of their communities.

Meet our therapists

My Denver Therapy is one of the largest woman-owned therapy private practices in Colorado with many of the best, most requested mental health therapists in the Denver Metro area.

As a therapist-owned practice with decades of combined experience, we care about seeing our clients heal, grow, and thrive. We’re one of the only therapy practices in Colorado with licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners who actively see new clients. Whether you’re an adult, teen, young adult, couple, or family, our inclusive therapist team is built to specialize in you.

Our practice started with one therapist in a shared office suite, but we’ve grown to help thousands of people in Colorado by providing in-person therapy at our conveniently located Denver Metro area counseling offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree, plus online therapy for clients throughout Colorado. Because of the way our team works, our therapists also provide consultation for other therapists and private practices in the Denver Metro area.

Our inclusive therapists provide some of the most innovative, effective, and in-demand forms of therapy available today, including EMDR, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, CBT, and IFS. We also have more therapists trained in Ketamine-assisted therapy, EMDR, and more teen therapists and young adult counselors than nearly every other private practice in Denver.

We know that clients want to find the best therapists in Denver, so our team includes therapists with different backgrounds, specialities, and experiences to help you find the right fit. We’ll match you with one of our therapists who is the best for your goals, location, budget, and schedule to help you get started quickly.

We’re out of network for insurance, Tricare, and are unable to take Medicaid, but most of our therapists’ rates are lower than the local and national averages for therapy.

All of our therapists take a client-focused approach to counseling and approach each session with  a commitment to your progress and growth.
