Understanding Family Based Treatment

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is a proven, evidence-based approach to treating eating disorders in adolescents. At My Denver Therapy, we believe in the power of family to support and guide recovery.

We have multiple experienced therapists who specialize in eating disorders and can work closely with families to address the underlying causes of eating disorders and help restore healthy eating patterns for your teen.

How FBT works

FBT focuses on three essential phases:

  1. Refeeding
Our therapists will work with you and your family to develop a safe and effective refeeding plan. This involves monitoring food intake, addressing fears and anxieties, and restoring a healthy weight.
  2. Returning Control to the Adolescent
As your child regains their health, we will gradually transfer control of eating back to them. This process is carefully guided to ensure a smooth transition.
  3. Addressing Underlying Issues
FBT addresses the emotional and psychological factors contributing to the eating disorder. We will work with your family to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and build stronger relationships.

  • How long does FBT take? The duration of FBT varies depending on the severity of the eating disorder and individual progress. However, most families see significant improvement within a few months.
  • What is the role of the family in FBT? Family members play an active role in FBT, attending therapy sessions, participating in meal support, and implementing treatment strategies at home.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
