Finding Denver therapists who accept insurance : HSA, FSA, PPO

Out-of-network for PPO insurance plans

At My Denver Therapy, our therapists are out-of-network for PPO insurance plans. When you’re looking for a therapist, you’ve likely found that most of the best therapists in Denver don’t accept insurance, and therapists who accept insurance often have long waitlists, aren’t accepting new clients, or can be so busy that they don’t get back to you.

While our therapists don’t accept insurance, we’ve found that many clients aren’t aware of some of the benefits of paying for therapy yourself, instead of using your insurance:

  • Not included on your medical record: When you use insurance for therapy, you need an official diagnosis on your medical record. Many people have jobs where a mental health diagnosis can affect their careers or ability to get life insurance.
  • Control of your sessions and treatment: Insurance companies dictate how long your sessions can be, the types of therapy you can have and how many sessions you can have. Also, insurance companies frequently deny the use of some of the most effective therapy methods, which can result in your being in therapy for longer.
  • Confidentiality: Insurance companies are allowed to have access to details of your therapy sessions, including your therapists’ notes. When clients realize that people who work at insurance companies can see what they’re going for therapy for, and details about their sessions, they quickly realize that their own privacy could outweigh the any benefits of using their insurance.

The cost of therapy in Denver can vary significantly, and there can be multiple factors involved when trying to find the right therapist for you. While many people want to use their insurance, the most important part of your success with therapy is matching with a therapist who you feel comfortable sharing with.

While we aren’t in network with any insurance companies, Medicaid, or TRICARE, we are happy to provide an invoice, often known as a “superbill,” that clients can submit to their insurance provider for possible reimbursement.

Finding Denver therapists who take insurance

We’ve heard from clients that they often have a hard time finding the right fit with an in-network therapist, whether it’s from a relationship or scheduling perspective. As a result, many people end up going out-of-network to find a therapist that’s the right fit for them.

We believe, and research shows, that the relationship between a client and therapist is the greatest indicator of success. We will happily provide invoices to our clients who come to us as out-of-network providers.

Note: We’re unfortunately unable to accept Medicaid.

Therapy insurance reimbursement

Clients who submit a superbill for insurance purposes pay for their services upfront, and then submit the superbill to their insurance. They’re usually reimbursed for a percentage of their appointment, as determined by their insurance provider.

When we provide superbills for many of our clients with PPO insurance plans, many of them are able to receive a percentage of their service fee through reimbursement. If you’ve had experience with seeing out-of-network providers in the past, you’re likely familiar with how to submit documentation to your insurance company.

Coverage varies by individuals’ insurance providers and plans. As an out-of-network provider, we’re unable to guarantee reimbursement or provide estimates for your specific insurance provider.

If you want to use your PPO insurance for therapy, we recommend calling your insurance company to get the details on your out-of-network benefits.

When calling insurance, here are some questions that you can ask:

  • Ask what you are financially responsible for.
  • Ask what percentage is covered for out-of-network providers.
  • Find out what the maximum amount allowed is per session.
  • Some insurance companies call these reasonable and customary fees.
  • If needed, the ZIP code for My Denver Therapy is 80124.
  • Check if you have a deductible to meet for out-of-network providers before you can receive any reimbursement.
  • Find out what your out-of-pocket maximum is.’

Using an HSA or FSA account

If you have a health savings account (HSA) or a flexible spending account (FSA), you’re eligible to use these accounts to pay for individual mental health counseling at My Denver Therapy.

If your insurance plan doesn’t include mental health coverage or won’t reimburse out-of-network costs, you can use your HSA or FSA funds to cover the balance. Although there should be no issue, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and verify with your HSA or FSA plan before booking an appointment.

It’s important to note that marriage counseling and family counseling is not HSA or FSA eligible, unless counseling is needed due to another medical condition. Other specialized treatments, such as substance abuse, are covered. It’s best to check with your plan administrator to ensure eligibility.

Sliding scale therapy

If out-of-network therapists aren’t covered by your plan or situation, due to a high deductible or other details of your plan, or if you don’t have an HSA or FSA, we also offer sliding scale therapy services for a limited number of clients.

If all of our sliding scale availability isn’t full, we are able to work with our clients to match them with a therapist that fits their therapy needs and financial situation.

Meet our therapists

My Denver Therapy is one of the largest woman-owned therapy private practices in Colorado with many of the best, most requested mental health therapists in the Denver Metro area.

As a therapist-owned practice with decades of combined experience, we care about seeing our clients heal, grow, and thrive. We’re one of the only therapy practices in Colorado with licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, social workers, and psychiatric nurse practitioners who actively see new clients. Whether you’re an adult, teen, young adult, couple, or family, our inclusive therapist team is built to specialize in you.

Our practice started with one therapist in a shared office suite, but we’ve grown to help thousands of people in Colorado by providing in-person therapy at our conveniently located Denver Metro area counseling offices in Denver, Greenwood Village, and Lone Tree, plus online therapy for clients throughout Colorado. Because of the way our team works, our therapists also provide consultation for other therapists and private practices in the Denver Metro area.

Our inclusive therapists provide some of the most innovative, effective, and in-demand forms of therapy available today, including EMDR, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, CBT, and IFS. We also have more therapists trained in Ketamine-assisted therapy, EMDR, and more teen therapists and young adult counselors than nearly every other private practice in Denver.

We know that clients want to find the best therapists in Denver, so our team includes therapists with different backgrounds, specialities, and experiences to help you find the right fit. We’ll match you with one of our therapists who is the best for your goals, location, budget, and schedule to help you get started quickly.

We’re out of network for insurance, Tricare, and are unable to take Medicaid, but most of our therapists’ rates are lower than the local and national averages for therapy.

All of our therapists take a client-focused approach to counseling and approach each session with  a commitment to your progress and growth.
