Therapy for cancer survivors in Denver

Find your new normal and process this part of your journey.

Overcome the mental effects of surviving cancer

You’ve faced one of life’s biggest challenges and emerged a survivor. Yet, the emotional and mental journey doesn’t end when treatment does. For many in Denver, the period after cancer can bring unexpected struggles—a mix of relief, grief, anxiety, and a feeling of being fundamentally changed.

At My Denver Therapy, we see you. We know that the journey from patient to survivor can feel like an entirely new emotional battle. Our compassionate and knowledgeable therapists specialize in the unique mental health needs of cancer survivors, offering a dedicated space in Denver where you can process your experience, manage your anxiety, and redefine your life after treatment.

You don’t have to do this alone. We’re here to help you move from surviving to thriving.

What Does “Survivorship” Really Mean?

The term “survivor” is a badge of honor, but it often glosses over the complex emotions that follow a cancer diagnosis and treatment. If you’ve felt isolated, misunderstood, or like you should just be happy now that it’s over, know that your feelings are valid.

Our therapists in Denver help you navigate common challenges that arise in life after cancer, including:

  • Fear of Recurrence (Anxiety/“Scanxiety”): The ever-present worry that the cancer will come back, often spiking around follow-up appointments.

  • Medical Trauma and PTSD: Processing the physical and emotional distress of procedures, treatment, and the near-death experience itself.

  • Identity Shift: Struggling with who you are now that you’re a survivor, often feeling disconnected from your “pre-cancer” self.

  • Grief and Loss: Mourning the loss of physical health, fertility, body image, control, or the life you had planned.

  • Relationship Strain: Navigating misunderstandings with friends or family who may think you’re “all better” now, or challenges in intimacy.

  • Fatigue and Brain Fog: Coping with long-term side effects that impact your daily function and mood.

  • Finding Meaning: Feeling a pressure to live a “better” life, or struggling to find purpose after such a profound experience.

Compassionate mental health care for cancer survivors

We tailor our approach to meet your unique needs. We go beyond general talk therapy to utilize modalities proven to help individuals process trauma and anxiety related to health and life-altering events.

Our effective therapeutic methods for cancer survivors include:

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy: To safely process the distressing memories and lingering symptoms of medical trauma and PTSD.

  • Somatic Therapy: Helping you reconnect with your body in a compassionate way, especially if cancer and treatment have led to dissociation or body image issues.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Tools to manage anxiety, particularly the fear of recurrence, by restructuring thought patterns and developing practical coping skills.

  • Meaning-Centered Counseling: Working with you to integrate your cancer experience into your life story, find renewed purpose, and move forward with clarity.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
