ADHD and executive functioning therapy
in Denver

Build executive functioning skills for planning, focus, and follow-through.

IMany adults with ADHD feel like they are constantly trying to catch up.You may have the best intentions to stay organized or complete tasks—but somehow the day slips away. Deadlines sneak up. Emails pile up. Projects take longer than expected.

At My Denver Therapy, we help adults across Denver develop stronger executive functioning skills so they can manage responsibilities, reduce overwhelm, and feel more confident in their daily lives.

Executive functioning refers to the mental processes that help you:

  • Plan and organize tasks

  • Start and complete projects

  • Manage time effectively

  • Stay focused despite distractions

  • Regulate emotions and frustration

When these skills are affected by ADHD, everyday responsibilities can feel far more difficult than they should.

What are executive functioning skills?

Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that allow you to manage daily life. They help you:

  • Start and complete tasks

  • Organize your time and responsibilities

  • Manage distractions

  • Control impulses

  • Regulate emotions

  • Prioritize what matters most

  • Stay focused even when something feels difficult

When executive functioning skills are impaired, even simple tasks can feel exhausting and even lead to burnout. You might know exactly what you need to do, but still struggle to begin. That disconnect is incredibly common among adults with ADHD.

Common signs of executive functioning challenges

Many adults who seek therapy report struggles like:

  • Chronic procrastination

  • Difficulty starting tasks

  • Forgetting important responsibilities

  • Feeling constantly overwhelmed by to-do lists

  • Trouble prioritizing tasks

  • Losing focus easily

  • Time blindness or underestimating how long things take

  • Emotional frustration or shame about productivity

Over time, these challenges can affect careers, relationships, and self-confidence. Therapy can help you build the tools and systems needed to change this pattern.

Executive functioning therapy for adults with ADHD

Many people assume ADHD only affects children, but millions of adults struggle with it as well.

In adults, ADHD often shows up as:

  • Disorganization

  • Difficulty following through

  • Feeling mentally scattered

  • Chronic overwhelm

  • Burnout from constantly trying to “catch up”

At My Denver Therapy, our clinicians help adults develop practical executive functioning strategies that work with your brain—not against it.

This may include:

  • Building sustainable planning systems

  • Creating routines that actually stick

  • Learning how to break large tasks into manageable steps

  • Improving emotional regulation and frustration tolerance

  • Developing realistic time management strategies

  • Reducing shame and self-criticism

Our goal is not to “fix” you. It’s to help you understand how your brain works and build tools that support it.

Why high-achieving adults often struggle with executive functioning

Many of our clients are successful professionals, entrepreneurs, or graduate students.

From the outside, things may appear to be going well.

But internally they often feel:

  • Exhausted from constant mental effort

  • Afraid of falling behind

  • Frustrated by disorganization

  • Stuck in cycles of procrastination and guilt

High-achieving individuals often develop compensatory strategies to manage ADHD symptoms—but those strategies can eventually break down under stress.

Therapy helps rebuild those systems in ways that are sustainable and realistic.

Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.
