What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting (BSP) is a therapeutic technique developed by David Grand, Ph.D. that combines elements of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Somatic Experiencing (SE). While EMDR focuses on eye movements and cognitive processing of traumatic memories, SE emphasizes the physical release of trauma-related energy. Brainspotting integrates these approaches, allowing for a deeper and more holistic healing experience.
Brainspotting leverages the principle that “where you look affects how you feel.” By identifying specific eye positions, or “brainspots,” that correlate with internal experiences, we can access and process deeply held trauma and emotional pain residing in the subcortical brain – the more primitive part of the brain where trauma is often stored. This allows us to go beyond talk therapy, which primarily engages the neocortex (the newer, thinking part of the brain), and address the root of the issue.
How does Brainspotting work?
During a Brainspotting session, your therapist will guide you to identify an issue you’d like to address. You’ll be asked to notice where you feel the activation (the feeling) in your body and assign a number to the level of activation.
Your therapist will then use a pointer to scan your visual field, helping you locate the brainspot associated with that activation. While maintaining focus on that spot, you’ll process the related images, memories, thoughts, and sensations as they arise. Bilateral music may also be used to enhance the processing. Your therapist will be there to support you throughout the entire process.

What can Brainspotting help of with?
Brainspotting is effective in treating a wide range of issues, including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Depression
- Relationship issues
- Addiction and substance abuse
- Performance anxiety (for athletes, musicians, actors, etc.)
- Chronic pain and fatigue
- Phobias
- Postpartum depression/anxiety

What to expect in a Brainspotting session?
In a Brainspotting session, you can expect a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to identify and process the root of your challenges. The process may involve exploring past experiences, current stressors, and future goals. Brainspotting can be combined with other therapeutic approaches to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.
